Stentura 400SRT question

Hello folks!
Okay. Ive had a 400SRT for a few years now. I got this machine from a broadcast captioner who never used a ribbon in it, and he also had it shimmed. I put in my paper and ink. When I first start writing the strokes look nice and dark, but within a few minutes all of the strokes on the paper start getting really, really light. This happens even with a brand new ink cartridge. I couldnt figure this out a couple of years ago so I just stopped using paper in my machine, and Ive only been using my machine hooked up to realtime. Im taking the RPR on Saturday, and I know I have to provide paper notes to them. What I have will suffice because you can see that I wrote it, but its just very light. I just thought I would check with you all to see if anyone knows what might be causing this and if theres anything I could do about it? My theory is that its the shimming, but I know a lot of people do this and dont have the same results or else shimming probably wouldnt be that popular. Thanks for reading this long question!- Shanna
