An attorney mispronouncing his clients name on the record.
Hello! I have a question regarding how to handle a mispronunciation or alternate pronunciation by an attorney of his clients last name on the record. A situation arose where an attorney was questioning a witness concerning a quot;Mr. Canary.quot; At first I was rather confused who this individual was as none of the other attorneys had mentioned him during their examinations. It was not until approximately 30 pages in that I realized Mr. Canary was supposed to be Mr. Kinnarney (Kin-arn-E), the plaintiff. Mr. Kinnarney was sitting in the room and never corrected the pronunciation of his last name, but I did verify via audio afterwards that I was indeed hearing Canary for Kinnarney. For the sake of an accurate transcript I thought I should leave the Canary and put sic as opposed to changing Canary to Kinnarney, but then I thought leaving Canary would create confusion as to who the attorney was speaking of in the transcript. Any input would be greatly appreciated of how to proceed!
